Olympic Symbolism

The athletics competitions, tug-of-war and weightlifting were only signified as Olympic Games. Just the first placed in these events were awarded the until today known medals. Moreover there were hounorary prizes for the winners in these sports, as Sullivan had promised it Coubertin and that were donated by different sites, amongst others a team prize by A.G. Spalding, sponsor of the American athletics team in 1900. An opening ceremony was only performed for the world exhibition itself, the games were included into the programme of the exhibition.
